After a long 8-month hiatus, the WeChat monthly review returned as a triumphant success.  Over breakfast a group of businessmen and women, including those working for fortune 100 companies, discussed the intricacies of WeChat and how businesses marketing themselves in China can stay ahead of the curve when using this vital social media tool.

The speaker for this event was Natasha Fang, founder and CEO of Tolmao Group – parent company of Digital Bootcamp – a leading integrated marketing agency based in Shanghai and the first of its kind to host these types of WeChat information sessions. She is a seasoned entrepreneur and businesswoman and is well versed in the intricacies of WeChat and how its everchanging features can be best used to promote a multitude of different businesses.

One of the key points during the session were the core values of WeChat: improving user experience through targeted but subtle advertising and staying at the forefront of social media through continued innovation.  Natasha discussed how the founder of WeChat has described using the app as a lifestyle; how everything someone wants to do, from ordering food to translation, can be done right in the app.  Another main point discussed was H5.  These interactive platforms, similar in many ways to Mini Programs, allow a business to interact with users in a multitude of different ways such as setting up an E-store or getting information from a user to later use in targeted advertising campaigns.

These central discussion points brought up numerous questions prompting dialogues about many other crucial concepts including but not limited to Enterprise accounts, data security, the rising popularity of cartoons in Mini Programs, finding follower counts on the platform, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and fake followers.

Many thanks to our event coordinator and host Digital Bootcamp Asia.  WeChat, and simply marketing in China, is complicated to the untrained eye, and without help it can be challenging to use the marketing tools at hand to their full potential.  Digital Bootcamp Asia will be hosting other events soon including a blockchain session on June 28th with three different industry experts and an event on July 11th featuring speakers with a combined 50+ years of experience in international business discussing the challenges they have run up against in the Chinese business world and how they can be avoided.
