Building Startups: A Recap

On July 26th Digital Bootcamp Asia hosted the event Building Startups from Ideas to Pitch.  Focused on how entrepreneurs and innovators can develop their investor pitch and attract the attention of venture capitalists, more than thirty people came out to listen to our three speakers: a speech coach for CEOs, a growth-hacker at one of the top Chinese incubators, and the founder a music app that got 87 investors interested with only one 8-minute pitch.

The firsts person to speak was Ryan Shuken, program director at Lean Venture Partners, growth-hacker at Chinaccelerator, and founder of the #1 startup podcast in China.  With years of experience investing in and creating startups on three different continents, Ryan has had a lot of success, but he has also faced many challenges.  His presentation centered around what he has learned with so many years in the venture capital business, and how others can avoid his mistakes. From sharing a formula about what venture capitalists look for, to what makes the perfect team, to what books a new business owner should read, his talk was an all-encompassing boot camp on how to attract the attention of venture capitalists for your business.

Next up was Adam Place. Adam is a DJ, a DJ who has worked on music projects with Fortune 500 companies, has launched viral products which have racked up multi-million views in days, and is the founder of the app NUSIC. Adam demonstrated his 8-minute venture capitalist pitch that recently got over 85 investors interested in his app at once.  Coached by Larry Schuester, our next speaker for the night, Adam’s pitch was full of energy, and very clearly demonstrated Adam’s passion and excitement about the app he was working to develop.  His pitch and presentation were seamless, and after listening to it, no one in the room doubted that it could attract such widespread attention from investors.

To close out the night was Larry Schuester, a speech coach at Chinaccelerator and founder of Shanghai based The Storytelling Company.  Having coached top executives from firms such as Aedas, one of the world’s top architectural and design firms, Larry is just the man to close out a night about perfecting your investment pitch.  In his talk he discussed what works and what doesn’t work when giving a presentation. Through examples including his own clients and famous innovators such as Steve Jobs, he analyzed how a great speech conveys passion and captivates the audience.  Larry emphasized that even small things, such as the way you say just a single word, can turn a mediocre speech into a captivating one.

Many thanks to our venue hosts CEO Suite.  Their offices are fantastic, and it is always a pleasure to work with them for our events. We would also like to thank our speakers and all of the professionals and entrepreneurs who came out to our event. It is people like you who make these events so special and are the reason why we enjoy hosting so much.  We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
